“Explore a variety of uncommon respiratory disorders which may be life-threatening”

Course Content

In this session, we are going to explore a variety of uncommon respiratory disorders which may be life-threatening. In Australia, (July 2020) legislation had been passed to ensure stonemasons and other occupations are protected from inhaled dust, called crystalline silica dust. However, many young adults have presented with severe silicosis and it has been identified that both Australia and New Zealand has had a resurgence of occupational silicosis.

It is vital that health professionals’ raise awareness of the severity of the problem related to silica dust and young workers in industry and stonework. We will also examine the potential dangers associated with inhaling potting mix as well as working with birds and other issues. These disorders vary in presentation from mild cases to life-threatening outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

In this session you will:

  • Explore how silica dust is harmful to lung tissue. Outline and discuss the presentation of the two types of silicosis: chronic and acute
  • Investigate the diagnosis and treatment of silicosis
  • Review the term ‘zoonotic’ and outline how it relates to Psittacosis as well as Covid 19
  • Discuss the clinical manifestations of Psittacosis and other disorders
