Course Content

‘Gastrostomy tubes and devices are an established means of providing long term enteral nutrition. The need for enteral tube feeding can be confronting, challenging and overwhelming for patients, their family and carers. They are often also dealing with chronic medical conditions or disabilities and require specialised treatment or therapy.

7 It is important that health professionals have the knowledge and skills to provide safe and appropriate care’. This session uses the document A Clinician’s Guide: Caring for people with gastrostomy tubes and devices (NSW)  as the reference source.

Learning Outcomes

In this session, you will:

  • Gain an understanding of the different types of gastrostomy tubes used in Australia
  • Acquire knowledge of  the key conditions and contraindications for the insertion of gastrostomy tubes
  • Receive information regarding pre and post-insertion of tube care
  • Gain increased knowledge in the recommendations to address  common complications associated with gastrostomy tubes
