“Gain an understanding of the ISBAR tool, a framework to assist with communication”
In this session, we are going to explore communication problems and the link to adverse events. We will examine the evidence that poor communication (non-assertion) increases adverse events and leads to a decrease in patient safety.
We will also discuss how the traditional medical and nursing hierarchy can adversely affect the nursing culture, where nurses and midwives may not feel safe to speak up and are fearful of repercussions if they do.
This webinar is from the perspective of a Registered Nurse who is a Registered Counsellor with extensive experience in assertion training for nurses and midwives.
The ISBAR communication tool is a framework for nurses to use to assist nurses with communication. The ISBAR tool will be explained and a discussion provided on the areas that nurses may find difficult. Assertiveness practical points will also be provided in this webinar.
In this session you will:
- Gain an understanding of the ISBAR tool, a framework to assist with communication
- Explain why the traditional medical and nursing culture imbalance can impact the outcome for a deteriorating patient
- Explore strategies that you can use to increase your personal power and gain assertion skills
- Apply practical tips on assertiveness – including body language, deflection of criticism, when others interrupt you when you speak
