Course Content

The 5-rights framework is known globally as the process for promising safe medication administration. However, there are times when Nurses do not follow the 5-rights process but can administer the right drug to the right patient at the right time in the right dose and via the right route.

This webinar will present the findings from a research project involving observations of Registered Nurses in practice. The research highlighted some specific strategies used to administer medications.

The environments were sometimes chaotic and under-resourced. The 5-rights framework was in the observation checklist but rarely was it observed in full. Instead, the participants used strategies that are not reflected in the framework to provide person-centered care.

Learning Outcomes

In this session you will:

  • Comprehend the medication management process and its constituents
  • Distinguish the principles of safe practice from adherence to process
  • Recognise some person-centred strategies for safe medication administration
  • Reflect on practice to identify safety strategies
