Antimicrobial Stewardship in Australian Healthcare
Presenter Cheryl Dezotti
- The Nursing CPD Institute
Cheryl Dezotti is a Director, a Nurse Education Consultant, and a Wound Care Specialist at the Nurses for Nurses Network. Cheryl co-created and administers this Network to provide an online platform for Nurses to meet their continuing professional development requirements. She is also the editor, and major contributor, of the Nursing News Blog associated with this Network.
Cheryl’s varied and interesting career highlights include clinical experience in acute surgical, medical, and renal dialysis. The completion of her Master’s degree in Quality in Health Care led to senior management roles in both the acute and aged care sectors, the later leading to her appointment as a Nurse Advisor and Administrator with the Department of Health and Ageing.
Cheryl has worked extensively in the field of education in a number of healthcare and university settings. She has a passion for wound care and has lectured widely on the subject in both Australia and internationally. This passion has led her to author a wound assessment book as well as creating a postgraduate wound care course.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an issue of great significance for health care in Australia and has been declared a significant threat to human health. Infections with pathogens resistant to antimicrobials lead to prolonged or serious illness, escalation in therapy with associated healthcare costs, hospitalisation or death.
Australia’s use of antimicrobials is high compared with other high-income countries. In 2015, almost 40% of patients admitted to Australian hospitals were prescribed an antimicrobial, and in the community, 45% of the population were dispensed one or more antimicrobials during the year.
In this session you will:
- Gain an understanding of the Australian framework for antimicrobial stewardship
- Receive information on antibiotic use in Australia
- Review the role of nurses, midwives and infection control practitioners in antimicrobial stewardship
- Learn key point of care recommendations to support the antimicrobial stewardship
