Noroviruses are the most common cause of epidemic gastroenteritis and are responsible for at least 50% of all gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide and are a major cause of foodborne illness. Outbreaks occur in residential care facilities, hospitals, schools and child care centres. Viral gastroenteritis is highly infectious and outbreaks can be difficult to control.
